Andalucia is well-known across Europe for its stunning, white-washed Spanish pueblos. Sprawling across the mountainous areas of the Málaga province, from Gaucín in the South to Mijas further north, these charming pueblos have put the culture back into the Costa del Sol.
But perhaps one of the most understated, and maybe lesser known of the pueblos on the Costa del Sol, is that of Benalmadena Pueblo. Nestled in the hills near El Higuerón, on the border between Fuengirola and Benalmadena, this stunning village overlooks the resort area of Benalmádena Costa and the gorgeous Marina.
Having previously been under occupation by the Moors, as well as the Romans, this stunning little enclave offers evidence of a world that once was, in stark contrast to the modern and luxurious side of Benalmádena that we have come to know and love. Evidence of its history is clear to see in the mysterious architecture of the area, heavily influenced by the Muslims of the Middle Ages.
The picturesque, cobbled streets are adorned with delicate geraniums in brightly coloured pots, leading the way to a plethora of traditional and quaint Andalucian-style bars, cafes and shops – the perfect location for a day of slow-paced window-shopping. Whilst the rest of Benalmádena has experienced extensive development over the years, Benalmádena Pueblo has remained almost untouched – offering visitors a unique slice of old Andalucia.
The restaurants of Benalmádena Pueblo offer a range of traditional and international cuisines in stunning surroundings, from traditional Spanish and Mediterranean dishes to pizza, pasta and bistro eateries. In Plaza España, you’ll find the fountain of La Niña, lined with bright orange trees, and home to many of the restaurants in the area.
If something with a little more cultural is your thing, then you must check out the Archaeological Museum of Benalmádena Pueblo. This historic collection of artefacts, donated by the late anthropologist Felipe Orlando-García Murciano, is of great archaeological importance on the Costa del Sol. It’s also one of the best collections from before the time of Christopher Columbus in the whole of Europe. Entrance is completely free and features information in English, Spanish, French and German. We highly recommend visiting this unique collection of historical relics.
If peace, prosperity and harmony is more your thing, then the Benalmadena Stupa (Buddhist Temple) is also just a few minutes drive from the pueblo. This stunning monument stands proud, at 33m high (the tallest in Europe), amongst the hills of Benalmádena, overlooking the Mediterranean. The temple is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday and is completely free to enter.
The legendary Castillo de Colomares (Colomares Castle) the very face of tourism in Benalmádena, is also just on the outskirts of the pueblo. This stunning monument pays tribute to the life and adventures of Christopher Columbus. Perhaps surprisingly, this renowned landmark was only built in 1987, though it’s enchanting masonry will have you believing otherwise. No trip to Benalmádena is complete without a visit!
Living in Benalmádena Pueblo is a unique and exciting experience, and perhaps different from what you might imagine. Whilst much of the architecture of the pueblo itself is older, there are still many modern properties that offer a fantastic mix of new and traditional – perfect for anyone wanting the best of both worlds.
